β-Py-C10-HPC is a violet-fluorescent analog of phosphocholine with the fluorophore on the lipophilic sn-2 acyl chain and a phosphocholine headgroup. The pyrene fluorophore has a unique property of forming concentration-dependent excited-state dimers that exhibit a red shifted fluorescence emission near 470 nm. This property has been exploited for investigations of cell membrane fusion and phospholipid transfer processes. β-Py-C10-HPC has also been used to characterize membrane structural domains and to investigate the effects of external factors such as drugs and membrane-associated proteins on lipid bilayer structure and dynamics. β-Py-C10-HPC is excited near 342 nm with fluorescence emission near 376 nm and red-shifted near 470 nm for the excited-state dimers. .
