NIETf is a fluorescent derivatization probe for the detection and quantification of carboxylic acids. NIETf readily reacts with the anions of carboxylic acids in organic solvents, like acetonitrile. NIETf may also be used to derivatize carboxylic acids, such as carnitine and acylcarnitines, in tissue, tissue homogenates, and plasma. The resulting fluorescent adducts are detectable by fluorescence at femtomole concentrations and by absorbance at 100 femtomole concentrations. NIETf is excited near 260 nm with a fluorescent emission near 399 nm.
