Speed DiO is a cationic, lipophilic, green-fluorescent dye that is commonly used as a neuronal tracer dye for both live and fixed tissues. The fluorescence of this dye is environmentally dependent and is greatly enhanced when incorporated into membranes or bound to lipophilic biomolecules. The diunsaturated linoleyl alkyl tails on this dye lead to faster diffusion of Speed DiO within membrane bilayers when used in neuronal tracing applications. Reportedly, the migration of Speed DiO is up to 50% faster than the saturated analog DiOC18(3) (product 6296). Speed DiO is excited near 485 nm with fluorescent emission near 500 nm.
