BZAR is a fluorogenic enzyme substrate for serine proteases. BZAR is non-fluorescent and colorless until enzymatic activity results in cleavage of one of the amide bonds and converts the non-fluorescent bis-amide substrate into a highly fluorescent monoamide product. Enzymatic activity is detected by fluorescence with an excitation near 492 nm and emission near 523 nm. BZAR is recognized for providing much greater sensitivity to enzymatic activity than similar coumarin-based fluorogenic-enzymatic assays. BZAR is also a known inhibitor of guanidinobenzoatase activity in tumor cells. .
