Rh 123 is a cell-permeant green-fluorescent probe that is taken up by active mitochondria. Rh123 has been used in various investigations of mitochondrial enzymatic activities and as well as transmembrane potential. Unlike the mitochondria-selective carbocyanine dyes, Rh 123 does not stain the endoplasmic reticulum. Rh 123 has applications as a laser dye and has also been used for investigations in photodynamic therapy. Rh 123 is excited near 507 nm with fluorescence emission near 529 nm.
