TMRM is a cell-permeant yellow-fluorescent dye that accumulates in the active mitochondria of living cells. TMRM is rapidly and reversibly taken up by active mitochondria and is considered a preferred dye for quantitative measurement of mithochondrial membrane potentials (ΔΨm) because it does not form dye-aggregates in cell membranes and has little interaction with cellular proteins. The fluorescence intensity of TMRM has been found to correlate with mitochondrial membrane potentials. TMRM is excited near 550 nm with fluorescence emission near 574 nm.
