EdU is an analog of thymidine that may be incorporated into the DNA of living cells. EdU is used to label proliferating cells and for detecting cells that have undergone DNA synthesis as developing embryos, newborn and adult organisms. EdU labeled cells and DNA may be detected using fluorescently labeled azides and copper catalyzed click chemistry, eliminating the heating and acid denaturing treatment required for the similar cell labels like bromodeoxyuridine. .
