TMPV is a highly sensitive chemiluminescent probe for detection of singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen reacts with TMPV to yield an unstable dioxetane intermediate that produces a chemiluminescent emission near 465 nm upon decomposition to 1-pyrenecarboxaldehyde. TMPV is selective for singlet oxygen and does not react with ROS species like hydroxyl radicals, superoxide, or hydrogen peroxide. TMPV can be used to detect picomolar concentrations of singlet oxygen in biological and chemical systems. .
