DDC [N,N'-didansyl-L-cystine] is a thiol-reactive, novel fluorescent probe for detection of apoptotic cells. Disulfide derivatives undergo a thiol–disulfide interchange reaction to form mixed disulfides. The fluorescent disulfide that is initially formed, however, can subsequently transfer its fluorophore to neighboring thiols. The disulfide linkage formed by didansyl cystine can also be cleaved with reagents such as dithiothreitol (DTT) or TCEP (#7100).
