Fluorescent probe for intracellular lipids and hydrophobic domains of proteins and also for staining of lysosomal phospholipid inclusions. Nile red is almost non-fluorescent in water and other polar solvents but undergoes fluorescence enhancement and large absorption and emission blue shifts in nonpolar environments.
