Prodan is a lipophilic fluorescent probe that is sensitive to the polarity of the environment and is commonly used in studies of cell membrane bilayer polarity. Prodan’s environmentally sensitive steady-state fluorescence parameters have been exploited for investigations of cell membrane properties and for determining and quantifying the phase state of the membrane. Prodan exhibits a redshift in fluorescence emission with increasing solvent polarity. Prodan has also been used for investigations of hydrophobic interactions of proteins like tubulin. Prodan is excited near 363 nm and has an environmentally dependent fluorescence emission.
