DiIC16(3) is a lipophilic, yellow-fluorescent probe that is commonly used to stain cellular membranes, including the plasma membrane and internal membranes like the endoplasmic reticulum. DiIC16(3) has been used for investigations of lipid domains and lipid trafficking in live cells. DiIC16(3) may also be used for neuronal membrane tracing in live organisms and may be easier to load into cell suspensions than other commonly used long-chain cyanine dyes. DiIC16(3) is minimally fluorescent in aqueous environments and exhibits a significant fluorescence enhancement when incorporated into cell membranes or when bound to lipophilic biomolecules. DiIC16(3) is excited near 549 nm and has an environmentally dependent fluorescence emission near 564 nm.
