DNSF is a fluorescent, active site directed inhibitor of serine-type proteases. DNSF is an irreversible inhibitor of these proteases, a result of covalent modification of active-site serine residues. DNSF has been used for detection of tumor cells in human squamous cell carcinoma by fluorescence. DNSF is also amine-reactive and has been used for labeling N-terminal amino acids of proteins prior to hydrolysis and analysis. DNSF conjugates have an environmentally sensitive fluorescence emission and a large Stokes shift, and are excited near 360 nm with a variable fluorescent emission near 580 nm.
