DPH is a blue-fluorescent probe for cell membrane interiors that is commonly used for membrane fluidity experiments. DPH is essentially non-fluorescent in aqueous environments but undergoes a significant fluorescence enhancement upon insertion into the lipid bilayers of cell membranes. DPH has been used for investigations of membrane viscosity, polarity, and membrane fluidity using time-resolved fluorescence polarization measurements and fluorescence decay techniques. DPH is excited near 350 nm and has an environmentally dependent fluorescence emission near 452 nm.
