DiOC18(3) is a cationic, lipophilic, green-fluorescent dye that is commonly used as a neuronal tracer dye for both live and fixed tissues. The fluorescence of this dye is environmentally dependent and is greatly enhanced when incorporated into membranes or bound to lipophilic biomolecules. Other applications of this dye include detection of cell-cell fusion and adhesion, tracing cell migration during development and after transplantation, cytotoxicity assays, and labeling of lipoproteins. DiOC18(3) is excited near 485 nm with fluorescent emission near 502 nm.
