DiIC18(5), also commonly known as DiD, is a lipophilic, red-fluorescent probe that is commonly used for cellular membrane staining, for retrograde and anterograde neuronal tracing, and for long-term labeling of live cells. DiIC18(5) is minimally fluorescent in aqueous environments and exhibits a significant fluorescence enhancement when incorporated into cell membranes or when bound to lipophilic biomolecules. DiIC18(5) is excited near 645 nm and has an environmentally dependent fluorescence emission near 663 nm.
