FDG is one of the most sensitive substrates for galactosidases. Nonfluorescent FDG is first hydrolyzed by beta-galactosidase to fluorescein monogalactoside and then to highly fluorescent fluorescein. Enzyme-mediated hydorlysis of FDG can be followed by the increase in either absorbance or fluorescence
