DPH PA is an anionic blue-fluorescent probe for investigations of cell membrane lipid bilayers and lipid-protein interactions. DPH PA is also commonly used as a building block for the synthesis of fluorescent phospholipids. DPH PA is essentially non-fluorescent in aqueous environments but undergoes a significant fluorescence enhancement upon insertion into the lipid bilayers of cell membranes. When used as a membrane probe, the degree of ionization of the propionic acid group will influence the location of DPH PA in the lipid bilayer. DPH PA is excited near 354 nm and has an environmentally dependent fluorescence emission near 429 nm.
