Dansylhydrazine is a short-wavelength, UV-excited, fluorescent dye that is reactive with ketones and aldehydes on biomolecules. Dansylhydrazine is widely used as a fluorescent probe for derivatizing ketones and aldehydes for chromatographic analysis. The hydrazide group reacts with ketones and aldehydes to form a relatively stable, but reversible hydrazone derivative. The hydrazone derivative may be reduced with sodium borohydride or sodium cyanoborohydride to yield a stable amine derivative. Conjugates of Dansylhydrazine have an environmentally sensitive fluorescence emission and are excited near 336 nm with a variable emission near 534 nm. .
