Description

Acridine orange 10-nonyl bromide is a cell-permeant green-fluorescent dye that is selective for staining the functioning mitochondria of live cells. Acridine orange 10-nonyl bormide has been used to analyze mitochondria by flow cytometry, characterize multidrug resistance, and measure changes in mitochondrial mass during apoptosis. Acridine orange 10-nonyl bromide is optimally excited near 495 nm with a fluorescent emission near 519 nm and exhibits a red-shifted fluorescence emission near 640 nm as a result of dimerization of the dyes when the dye molecules are co-localized in close proximity. This metachromatic property has been exploited for investigations of cardiolipin, which has two phosphate binding sites and yields a red shifted fluorescence emission when stained with acridine orange 10-nonyl bromide.
